Brookfield High School Named a Purple Star School!

Purple star logoThe Brookfield Local School District is proud to announce that the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) has selected Brookfield High School as a Purple Star School for the Class of 2025. This designation recognizes the school’s strong commitment to supporting students and families connected to the U.S. military.

Brookfield High School is among 115 Ohio schools, and one of just four in Trumbull County, to receive the esteemed award for the first time. There are 15 students with active duty/National Guard military connections at BHS.

“This recognition is a true honor and a reflection of the hard work and compassion of our dedicated faculty and staff,” said Nicholas Wagner, BHS Assistant Principal and the district’s Military Liaison.

The Purple Star Award is given to schools showing a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. To qualify, schools must complete a series of required activities, including designating a staff member as a military liaison and maintaining a webpage dedicated to resources for military families. Additionally, schools must complete at least one optional activity, such as staff professional development, military appreciation events, or celebrating the Month of the Military Child.

At Brookfield High School, events to support military-connected students include an annual Veterans Day breakfast honoring those who have served, and a Military and First Responder Appreciation Night held during a home football game to recognize community members for their service.

“These important events allow us to create an inclusive and supportive environment for our students with military connections,” Wagner added.

ODEW Director Stephen Dackin praised awardees writing in his congratulatory letter: “Ohio’s military-connected youth require supports that consider their unique wellness and academic needs, especially while navigating school transitions. The Purple Star award signifies your school’s demonstrated commitment to serving these students and families, and I applaud and appreciate your commitment to serving military-connected students and their families.”

The Purple Star designation is valid for three years, with Brookfield High School eligible to apply for a designation renewal in fall 2027 to be considered for the Class of 2028.
